![]() Next Phase Wrestling is Vermilion County's very own premiere backyard wrestling federation. Starting out in late 1999, a group of friends, with the desire to emulate the superstars they watched on RAW and Nitro, set out to build themselves a ring and perform for themselves and others willing to come watch them. The ring and production was kept simple. Nothing big or extravagant was necessary. The opportunity to jump into a ring and pretend to be a wrestler for a mere 10 minutes was enough. The number of participants was small, so everyone had more than one in-ring persona. Out of this ensemble came some of the most imaginative gimmicks seen outside professional wrestling circles. Wrestlers like the hardcore Omega, the geriatric Old School McGee, the poem-reading Bobby Beatnik, and others became NPW's greatest strengths.
As time passed, rings became damaged and new ones were built. Wrestlers came and went. Locations of NPW events changed from time to time as it became necessary. The crowds only were small by even the most modest standards, but that didn't matter. We did it cuz we enjoyed it, and that's all that mattered. That mentality has not changed.
Our current home, the Brummet Arena and Livestock Center, just southeast of Bismarck, Illinois, holds a 16 X 16 ft. ring which we put together in December of 2001. It has been our greatest achievement to date. The ring is a slight step down from the current rings used by professionals. In fact, it is based on professional designs. It may not be the prettiest thing a wrestler has stepped in, but we have been extremely pleased. We continue to perform "shows" atleast once a month, and get together for practices and smaller "shows" more frequently.
We don't claim to be the first at what we do, or even the best. We've stuck with it all this time cuz we all share a passion for wrestling. We understand that many consider backyard wrestling irresponsible and dangerous, and we couldn't agree more. We don't consider ourselves real wrestlers, and the majority of us don't even have any aspiration of becoming professionals. That's not why we do this. It's about all about having a good time. And all it took was a group of kids with a video camera, a decent homemade ring, and a love of wrestling. That is Next Phase Wrestling.
