![]() I've just sat down to my computer only hours after Next Phase Wrestling's Next Event '02 came to a close. Now in theory, the show is fresh in my mind so this should be a descriptive, accurate piece of writing. In theory, working over 40 hours a week with no benefits shows you have heart. And in theory, listening to "Sweet" Jimmy D. talk for hours on end is fun and doesn't kill the town.
Could Triple... I mean..."Sweet" Jimmy D. have been on Next Event any more? First things first...that promo with Melvin Shmemtner. State your point, get on to the wrestling. Referee Matt Dietz commented, saying Hunter Jimmy D. was really fading on that one. Emperor Tukre defended the DDT Champion, saying at least he had a point to what he was saying and only stayed on one subject and focus, as opposed to discussing his everyday life, much like what Tukre and Dekin used to do. True, Jimmy Helmsley D. did have a lot to discuss--Omega, Wild Bill, past King of Extremes, DCW and Schmemtner's banning Zero and Crisis from the Brumett Arena and Livestock Center. I was cleaning my glasses during the interview, so I couldn't clearly see Schmemtner's reaction. I'm sure it read something like "I hope this guy wraps it up soon because we've got some good wrestling coming up."
Congratulations to Dare Devil on making it to a non-battle royal main event. His teaming with Big Smith may have earned them a loss, but it's kinda hard to win when Wade and Jade Shocker and Accelerator start attacking you.
Very mysterious was the finish to the show. One would want to believe it had to have been Omega who stormed the ring when the lights went out, laid out everyone in the ring but "Sweet" Jimmy D., and painted an Omega symbol on Wildkat's back. But NPW's franchise player is gone. He was in the coffin "Sweet" Jimmy D. set on fire at the end of King of Extreme. Right? And if it is Omega, why didn't he attack Jimmy D.?
Jimmy D. sure was friendly to Wildkat without the presence of Zero and Crisis. Is Wildkat being accepted as a true member of the DCW revolt? Or is a friend in need a friend indeed?
I'm not sure how Crisis was able to make it into the Arena/Center to assist his fellow Kings to victory in the main event. As the commentatorys say, "let's get some security down there!"
I liked the exhibition match between Wade and Jade Shocker. Word is that these two will start teaming and I'm hereby already considering them a threat to Old School McGee's and T-Money's All Vermilion Tag Team Championships.
Sorry for bringing up "Sweet" Jimmy D. so much in this column, but this paragraph is supposed to focus on Wild Bill. Seriously! Does Wild Bill care that Big Smith ran in on his match with the DDT Champion? Bill said he cares more about the NPW Heavyweight Championship, but Smith interfered (with just cause) while the 3-King leader had all the heat on this year's King of Extreme. If I know Wild Bill, he wanted to come back and fight Jimmy D. on his own. But it's clear the story of Wild Bill isn't with "Sweet" Jimmy right now, it's with Arnie Ambiguous and that Heavyweight Championship.
Speaking of Arnie, didn't something seem off about him at Next Event?
In my last column I wrote that we shouldn't expect to see Chilly McFreeze in an NPW ring anytime soon. But there he was raising a ruckus in the battle royal and stunning everyone in the All Vermilion Tag Team Championship match. This tirade must end! I was able to reach Chilly for comment and he says he has a great time making post-match happenings way longer than they should be.
Did any matches from Next Event end in a clean finish?
I guess when shows are fresh in my mind when I type my opinions it'll only result in longer, more drawn out columns!
'Til next time, I'm Mick Gene.
