![]() It has been a while since I've typed up a column here, so let's get caught up with NPW happenings.
Rain fell on Tag Team Twister, and thus for the majority of those there, rain fell on the fun too. Folks just didn't wanna be there and I'm sure that'll reflect on the tape, which I haven't seen as I write this. Some good laughs were had and Tilton Tangler said he felt great after his match despite being pinned by El Ninja. Sparky and Big Smith get a shot at the All-Vermilion Tag Team Championships at Barnyard Blitz for winning the tournament. Given they were one of two teams originally scheduled for the originally 8-team tournament, it's a good thing they won. Due to the weather and prior committments of others, we only did a 4-team tournament as opposed to the first plan of 8. Because of the rain, that's really all we could've hoped for.
One of the big stories coming out of Unnatural Distaster was Wild Bill allying up with Dan Benson and Gumbo Boy. You've got former tag team champions, a former NPW champion, and a current DCW champion in that mix. With Zero seemingly done, the rest of NPW should consider buddying up themselves if they want a chance against this band of southern fried roughnecks.
Someone who Next Phase wrestlers would like to befriend doesn't want anything to do with anyone else. I'm talking about X-Celerator, who only wants association with the NPW Championship. With getting a huge win over Gumbo Boy and Dare Devil being unable to show at Unnatural Disaster, X-Celerator has another argument as to why he should be the champion's next challenger.
Back to Dan Benson and Zero, it appears the final chapter of that epic has been written. Three singles matches and three wins for the Longhorn. All knock down drag out fights. Zero's without a doubt given us some of the best matches ever in Next Phase Wrestling. Right now, it's not his time for NPW.
Quick thought: Isn't is funny how the first three matches on Unnatural Disaster were there to create interest in Tag Team Twister, yet only Sour Dawg ended up being in the tournament?
The Alpha Males had a good title defense against Ivan Ruski and Jon Tomson at Unnatural Disaster. The champs know how to use their numbers to their advantage. Ivan's "what hurts me can only make me stronger" philosophy brought his team very close to upsetting the champs.
Big Smith got a solid measure of revenge against El Ninja for his actions at Mayhem in May. El Ninja had a great game plan to take out the big man's knee, but the former 2-time NPW champion overcame with his great equalizer: the chokeslam.
Brian Henderson and Soldja gave us some great visual athletic moments. We look forward to seeing more of them in the future.
It's always great to see Wild Bill and Omega in the ring together. They are an NPW classic for sure. Unfortunately, this time their match served as more of a backdrop for Bill's joining up with Gumbo Boy and Dan Benson.
Sparky's DQ victory over Dan Benson was similar to the Wild Bill/Omega match. Not in the way the match went, but in that it served as a backdrop for more mischief with the three southern fried roughnecks. Sparky made a great choice in teaming up with Big Smith because they both need someone to watch their backs right now.
Mars's victory over Treehugger to close out Unnatural Disaster was a breath of fresh air compared to all the interference in the preceding matches. The two had a solid mat based athletic contest and kept it that way. Mars will need to keep his submission skills good and polished to keep moving back up the NPW ladder where he belongs.
The next NPW show is Sunday July 10th, Barnyard Blitz. If the weather calls for rain, we'll promtly postpone it. But July usually means heat, humidity, sweat, and hard fought NPW action.
