4/26/2005 Mick Gene
Hello everyone, Mick Gene here about to totally steal another idea from the fine folks at pwinsider.com. This time I'll be using their pay-per-view elevator format to recap and provide my thoughts on 2005: A Wrestling Oddity. Basically, Buck Woodward lists each wrestler from the show and explains what the show did for him, while comparing his situation to an elevator going up and down in a hotel. Once I get rolling, you'll see how it works if it doesn't make sense by now.
Dare Devil: He retained his NPW Championship in a hard fought match with Zero, proving he's a real winner. Although Zero had punished Devil for the majority of the match and by all rights should have won, the champ used his head, saw an opening and siezed the opportunity to escape 2005: Wrestling Oddity with the belt. At Mayhem in May, he'll defend against former champion Wild Bill. NPW Elevator: Can't go up a floor because he's already on the top level.

"Longhorn" Dan Benson: In addition to cutting possibly the best interview in the history of NPW, the DCW Champion retained his belt by beating his current arch rival Mars clean in the middle of the ring. On May 8th, he'll lead a team with X-Celerator and El Ninja in a survivor series elimination match. NPW Elevator: No movement because he's in the penthouse suite.

Sparky: Despite being thrown all over the ring by X-Celerator, the ultimate underdog left 2005: A Wrestling Oddity with his Unified Hardcore Championship. The only thing is, had it not been for Dare Devil's interference, would Sparky be the champ now? Then again, he'd kicked out of every other big slam X-Cel threw at him. Bottom line is, Sparky retained the belt and will team up with Big Smith and Mars in the survivor series match May 8th. NPW Elevator: Up a floor to the massage parlor to heal after the match he had.

Alpha Males: Wayne Shocker and Dre-Kahn knocked off the most celebrated tag team in Danville wrestling history at 2005: A Wrestling Oddity. They had Alpha to make sure this happened, but the threesome is functioning as a well oiled unit and the proof is in their All-Vermilion Tag Team Championships. They will defend the belts at Mayhem in May, but their main competition will be at each other's throats. T-Money and Old School McGee have agreed to get the band back together to attempt to get back the glory they once had. NPW Elevator: Up a floor, although the ride's giving Alpha a headache.

Zero: The intergalactic superstar of Danville wrestling ran the NPW Champion into the ground, but failed to put his shoulders to the mat and leave with the belt. I can't put him down a floor because had the match gone to a decision, Zero would've won. Next month Zero can relieve some built up frustration against Gumbo Boy, who he's battled in a street fight but never in one on one competition. NPW Elevator: On the same floor, but with his finger on the button to take him to the weight room.

Mars: He fought hard like we all expected, but Benson's lariat was too much, as it would be for any man. The former DCW Champion has some fighting back ahead of him if he wants to get back into the Danville championship scene, and Mayhem in May looks to be the place to do it as the Longhorn will be on the other team in the survivor series match. That is, if Sparky and Big Smith don't get to him first. NPW Elevator: Down a floor, but a long way from the lobby.

X-Celerator: The Russian nightmare brutalized Sparky in their match for the Unified Hardcore Championship, but due to Dare Devil's outside interference, X-Cel's quest for gold in NPW remains a quest. However, being a survivor at Mayhem in May can put him right back into championship contention. Afterall, Sparky and two former champions will be his opposition. Don't forget about Dare Devil "oweing" the King of Extreme a title shot after the events that transpired at Lights Out 2004. NPW Elevator: Down a floor, but will give the bellhop an Overdrive if he doesn't push the up button soon.

Dirtlegs: The former tag team champs seemed to have things going their way during their championship match at 2005: A Wrestling Oddity. But with a little trickery from Alpha and quick thinking by Dre-Kahn, the Dirtlegs came up empty handed. Something unusual will happen at Mayhem in May--a tag team is challenging THEM to a falls count anywhere match. The Toxies have to be as crazy as they act in the ring to actually want to brawl with the Dirtlegs. NPW Elevator: Down a floor, but the bellhop rubbed Dirty Al's belly until it was smelly on the way down.

Wild Bill: After helping ward off the Russian invasion back in November, the rough and tumble cowboy won the oh so prestegeous "Back to the Basics" elimination match. Had Omega been there, it would have been a greater victory for Bill, but nonetheless, he sees himself with a shot at Dare Devil and the NPW Championship May 8th. NPW Elevator: He skipped the elevator and took the stairs, and now he's knocking at the door to the top floor for someone to let him in.

Big Smith: Although he was pinned by Wild Bill in the elimination match at 2005: A Wrestling Oddity, Big Smith lasted past Alpha and Dominion. We know Dominion turned out to be Dre-Kahn under the hood, meaning Big Smith pinned one half of the All-Vermilion Tag Team Champions. But his sights are set at X-Celerator in the survivor series match. NPW Elevator: On the same floor, waiting for the next lift.

El Ninja: He bounced back from his loss to X-Celerator last November with a win over Jade Shocker at 2005: A Wrestling Oddity. The ban of top rope moves for the show didn't seem to affect him, as it only gave the Tokyo, Mexico native a change to show off his ground game. We all know he wants back in the Unified Hardcore Championship scene. With Sparky on the other team in the survivor series match at Mayhem in May, he'll have the opportunity to do just that. NPW Elevator: Up a floor, and being higher off the ground strangly gives him the desire to do a moonsault.

Jade Shocker: It was great to see someone who loves to wrestle with NPW get a chance to do so while on leave from Iraq. No, Jade isn't back in NPW and probably won't be able to make anymore shows this year, but don't give up all hope. When ever he's in town, look for Mr. Shocker to appear at NPW events. NPW Elevator: On the ground floor so he could leave through the lobby and get back on the plane.

Gumbo Boy: Let's not forget about the incoherant cajun who won the rubber match between him and Chilly McFreeze. It may have been strange for these two to actually wrestle in a wrestling ring, but Gumbo took advantage and picked up the victory. Now he heads into Mayhem in May on the card against Zero. How will these two be able to fight with rules in place? NPW Elevator: Up a floor, but disappointed to learn crawdads aren't on the room service menu on any floor.

Chilly McFreeze: Well, he should be happy he was at least on an NPW show, but can't be happy he lost his match, and without getting a stunner off on his opponent no less. He did stun the ref, which was nice, but didn't follow with any jawjackin'. Plus, he doesn't have a match for Mayhem in May. NPW Elevator: Down a floor, but it's nothing a 6'er can't cure.

Dimebag Davey: Hey, he was on the show and even got a win in the opening contest. Although that may seem like a good thing for Dimebag, he'll just celebrate to no end and probably won't make Mayhem in May. NPW Elevator: Was on the way up a floor, but broke the hotel's no smoking policy. Papa John's didn't deliver that far away anyway.

Sour Dogg: At least he was on the show which is more than I can say for some. Not winning his match doesn't look too good for getting a match on May 8th though. Sour Dogg's basically looking ahead to Tag Twister 2005 at this point. NPW Elevator: On the ground floor, waiting for his mom to pick him up in her minivan.

Toxies: After closing out 2004 with losses to the Dirtlegs and The Alpha Males, Toxic Byllie and Toxic Frank started 2005 on the right track with a victory. Could the return of Toxic Johnny be the secret to their success? Time will tell as following their win they were nuts enough to make a challenge to the Dirtlegs in a falls count anywhere match, for that matter, for Mayhem in May. NPW Elevator: Up a floor, but the hotel manager made them leave the mad cow behind. Moo bitch!

Senior Fabuloso and Dr. Midnight: It was great to see these two on a show, and they gave the Toxies a good match, but losing to a team known for losing doesn't sit well with the commissioner. Don't count them out for action on May 8th, but chances remain slim. NPW Elevator: Down a floor, back to the ground level where a large man in a suit and sunglasses named Curly threw them into the lobby by the seat of their pants.

As I've mentioned, our next show is Mayhem in May set for Sunday May 8th. The name Mayhem in May was come up with by Geoffy Ladoo back in the DCW glory days of 1998. If you know your Danville wrestling history, you'll know the show name was never used. Anyway, Wildkat, T-Money, Treehugger Dave Willis and Omega are expected to be at Mayhem in May. Wildkat is in the same situation as Jade Shocker, in that he's on leave from his duties from the military and is not making a full time NPW return. Regardless, it'll be great to have him on the show against Omega.
Reporting for NPW news, I'm Mick Gene.
