![]() NPW Management has called upon former intern and booker, Joey the King, who left NPW for Japan back in December of 2001, to come back and speak on events, present and past, to better provide the fans with a better understanding of our fine promotion, backstage and on.
The saying goes like this...
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
What does that mean? BEATS THE HELL OUT OF ME! I only know that I'm here to add an old, yet fresh perspective on events in NPW: how they came to be and how they will affect the future of this fine promotion.
Why was I tapped for this? Cuz, for a time, I had the most important job in NPW. See, Randy Dekin was starting to get lazy(I never told anyone this), so he hired me, a lowly "intern", to take over the day-to.....ok, more like month-to-month, booking duties. What a blast! Overseeing NPW, at its lowest point in its history (wrestling in an outdoor "arena"), to the beginnings of its greatest achievement (wrestling in a barn), gave me an insight that few others can share.
Well, anyways, back to the present for a moment. I see alot of new faces actively participating at the Brummet Arena & Livestock Center, and I hope to get to know them better as time permits. I, also, see alot of old faces, and many of them have not changed for the most part. Reviewing NPW's latest show, Open Season, I realized that appearances can be deceiving.
Take a look at our newly crowned Next Phase Wrestling Champion (minus the "Heavyweight"....times do change), Wild Bill. I remember booking him, and, at the time, his tag team partner, the Tilton Tangler, in tag matches back at the Ralph Smith Horizon. The Backyard Brawlers they were called, and arguably, the winningest tag team in NPW history(no offense to Ultimate). Wild Bill appearred the quiet type, letting Tangler handle most of the trash talkin', but in the ring Bill was the "wild" one. He sure had a thing for bats. Still does. Reminds me of Dekin banning bats specifically based on Wild Bill's previous antics. That statute didn't last long.
Now, a former NPW Lightheavyweight Champion, walks around with NPW's most prominent, prestigious title. I couldn't be more shocked and satisfied. Satisfied that the barriers that may have once held Wild Bill back(*cough*...DEKIN...*gasp*) no longer keep a shining star from reaching the top. For the record, the Lightheavyweight Championship no longer exists, and at the time Wild Bill held it, he wasn't even Wild Bill! He was Pitfire(nice name by the way). As all things in the wrestling business should be, let the past stay the past. And on that note, let's discuss what SHOCKED me...
Ya know, I was just jumping on the NPW bandwagon as we were moving our facilities out of ol' Grant Manor. Wonderful place. Decent neighborhood, but what a landlord. Sherman had that wonderful southern charm and style, that would let you get away with looking like Clint Eastwood in a "Spaghettie Western" without looking comical. I, and I say this with all honesty, saw right through it. I wasn't fooled. He had bigger, greedier intentions for NPW, but thankfully he never got the chance to ruin us completely. Well, now it looks like he may have a 2nd chance, now that he's seemingly aligned himself with our current NPW Champion.
Maybe Wild Bill saw his career going down the toilet. Maybe he lacked direction with no Tilton Tangler to be at his side. Maybe, as all wrestlers whose ambitions lack focus, he got desperate, and saw Sherman as the perfect means of getting the one prize which was never allowed within arms reach. Sad really, but I refuse to end this column on a sad note. Sure, ol' Sherman's back. He's got some dirty, underhanded scheme in store for NPW, and he has the title in his back pocket, but their's always a bigger fish. Wild Bill, someday, will meet that bigger fish. He can have his day in the sun now, but, eventually, it will shine on someone else.
This is the King, bowing out...
