![]() I've been thinking about what took place at Open Season during the past couple hours after the show ended. I thought about the show while eating quesadillas and watching Horatio Sans try to make Jimmy Fallon laugh in every skit on Saturday Night Live. I thought about the show while getting absolutely destroyed at General Chaos for Sega Genesis because I was playing alone and not with my brother. And I'm thinking about it now as I type this and talk about the show with T-Money over Instant Messenger. I supposed it's a good thing I'm thinking about Open Season as I type this. Otherwise you'd probably get a column about Mr. North covering Barbie Belle's face.
The big news of Open Season has got to be Wild Bill's winning of the NPW Heavyweight Championship and the return of Sherman, who will apparently serve as Bill's manager. As for the match, it seemed as if one just couldn't put the other away. Neither to my knowledge had ever pinned the other before. They hit practically all of their signature moves but they just kept kicking out. It took perhaps the greatest menace in the history of Next Phase Wrestling to steal the belt away from Arnie, who had held the title since Lights Out '02, which happened about 8 months ago.
Wild Bill being the NPW Champion doesn't bother me. He won this year's King of Extreme. He was held down during the previous ownership. He always works hard and puts on solid matches. It's the way he won the championship that gets me. Not so much how, but who. Here's a guy who tried to pinch as much money out of Next Phase Wrestling as he could. He wanted to promote NPW as some sort of circus act along with a boxing group. Was Wild Bill desperate to win the gold? Or was some sort of financial deal cut? Whatever happened, Wild Bill sold his soul to General Sherman, and with NPW's commissioner on the side of the DCW Kings, who knows what will become of NPW?
As for the other matches, Omega showed he's still got it in the gauntlet match. His time away didn't hinder his ring skills. I'm still interested to know how he got out of that coffin alive at King of Extreme.
I'm interested to see what becomes of the #1 contendership to the DDT Championship. Big Smith and Omega eliminated themselves at the same time, making them co-winners. My guess is it'll be Big Smith, Omega and "Sweet" Jimmy D. for the DDT Championship at the next show, which will most likely be called Christmas Slay '02. Jimmy D. won't like that plan I'm sure. Not that that is the plan.
Dare Devil had a solid showing against the Superior Titan Communion. No one expected him to win; it was just frustrating that he lost after it seemed he was going to have a chance when Jade Shocker and Acclerator were at odds. I have to give credit to Wayne Shocker for realizing what's really important--getting the win--despite argument.
I'm glad Big Smith got the win over Melvin Schmemtner. Maybe that'll teach that turncoat a lesson.
And finally, I wasn't overly impressed with the opening tag title match. They had some decent spots, but the Tangler just didn't seem focused. He continually would refer to his opponents and his partner by the wrong name, and he would get the advantage on an opponent, only to go yell more at El Ninja. Didn't make much sense.
Next NPW event is looking to be December 8th. Once again, all NPWers are invited to attend the FUW-Charleston show Friday December 6th at the Top of the Roc. Enjoy the FUW/NPW Thanksgiving Sunday November 24th!!!
