Mick Gene 11-30-2005
2005 was a solid year for Next Phase Wrestling. You can say the ring has seen better days and there are more guys on the disabled list than there have ever been. Both of those are repairable, hopefully. What you can't take away from NPW is our consistancy and the many historical moments the year produced. Like last year, I bring to you the NPW Year in Review. Like last year's, this isn't a list of the year's best matches. This is just what happened.

2005: A Wrestling Oddity
Dare Devil assists Sparky in retaining the NPW Unified Hardcore Championship in a match with X-Celerator. This marked the end of the Dare Devil and X-Celerator's alliance and they would feud for the rest of the year.

Dare Devil defeats Zero to retain the NPW Championship. The only reason I'm mentioning this is because Dare Devil audibly vomits in the back after the match.

Mayhem In May
Radiant Rex Rogers makes his debut, defeating El Rosebud.

"Sweet" Jimmy D. returns to the ring after an 18 month absense but loses to Scarlet Spider.

The Dirtlegs defeat the Toxies in a Falls Count Anywhere match to blow off their feud that began in 2004.

NPW holds its first survivor series elimination match. X-Celerator was the sole survivor. Many feuds were either started, moved along, or ended in this match. This includes El Ninja vs. Sparky (moved along but didn't blow off), Mars vs. Benson (moved along and marked Mars pinning Benson for a 2nd time), Smith vs. Benson (seeds for this feud were planted here), and Smith vs. X-Celerator (blew off here after X-Celerator caused Smith to lose the NPW Championship back in November '04. They would feud over the tag team championships later in the year though).

Unnatural Disaster
"Longhorn" Dan Benson defeats Zero in NPW's first "I Quit" match to blow off their long standing feud. This would also be Zero's last NPW match in 2005.

Big Smith defeats El Ninja for revenge after El Ninja attacked Smith after being eliminated in the survivor series match last month.

"Longhorn" Dan Benson and Gumbo Boy ally up with Wild Bill after Benson's match with Sparky. Bill's job and injuries would prevent the group from making a serious impact in NPW.

Tag Team Twister
Big Smith and Sparky defeat Albert Yankum DDS and Musab Balbali Babu to win the tag twister tournament and become #1 contenders to the All-Vermilion Tag Team Championships.

El Ninja defeats Tilton Tangler in a bonus match. This would be Ninja's last match in 2005.
Many participants were unable to show because of the rain.

Barnyard Blitz
Black Coal Carson debuts in Old School McGee's corner in a match with the Psychotic Drifter. A feud started between the two veterans when McGee admitted to Carson that he had stuck a banana in his car's tailpipe to prevent Carson from competing in a heavyweight title match decades ago.

Sparky is unable to appear to the show due to his job. Big Smith chooses Omega as his partner and challenges any team to a match since Tag Team Twister was half the tournmanet it was supposed to be. X-Celerator and Scarlet Spider not only answer the challenge, but win the match to become #1 contenders to the All-Vermilion Tag Team Championships.

A Tilton Tangler vs. Gumbo Boy feud is started during a Tangler vs. "Longhorn" Dan Benson match when Gumbo dressed and impersonated Tangler's daddy, leading to Benson's victory. Tangler and Gumbo would go on to feud for the next couple months.

X-Celerator and Scarlet Spider defeat Wayne Shocker and Alpha to win the All-Vermilion Tag Team Championships, ending their 10 month reign as champions. This would mark the first championship wins for both X-Celerator and the Scarlet Spider. Dracon's absence was never explained.

King of Extreme
Wayne Hewes III dies after drinking the poison involved in the antidote on a pole match that pitted Toxic Billy against Toxic Frank. Billy won the match.

Wildkat defeats "Sweet" Jimmy D. in a long awaited stretcher match. This was the first time these two had met since Wildkat turned on Jimmy back on November '03. This would also be Jimmy's last match in 2005.

Old School McGee defeats Black Coal Carson in a banana street fight, finishing their feud. Carson left NPW after the match.

"The Bad News Brawler" Dick Norton Anderson debuts in a losing effort to King Kong Bruiser Doty in a candy cane on a pole match. This would be the last appearance for both wrestlers this year.

NPW's first ever pervert lumberjack match is held. Dan Benson defeats Off Duty Officer Johnson when Johnson was too busy arresting the perverts.

Hoghead Hellspawn dies after drinking from the correct cup in the Holy Grail Match with Wayne Shocker. By default, Shocker advanced.

Omega defeats Gumbo Boy and the Spirit of Dominion in the 2nd ever Moves of Dominion Match. Melvin Schmemtner made it a Best of 7 moves match. This would be Omega's last match in 2005, as he returned to school in Carbondale shortly after. We thankfully didn't hear from the Spirit of Dominion anymore this year either.

Old School McGee defeats Wildkat in a Loser Goes to Hell match. This would be Wildkat's last match in 2005 as he had to return to Iraq.

Big Smith aids Wayne Shocker to victory over Dan Benson. Smith and Benson would continue to feud for the rest of the year.

Wayne Shocker becomes the 2005 King of Extreme by winning an extreme triple threat match over Old School McGee and Alpha Male partner Dracon. Alpha would turn on Shocker during the match, signifying the end of the tag team.

Heatstroke
Dracon injures his neck on a Stone Cold Stunner during a match to blow off his feud with Chilly McFreeze. Dracon would still win the match, but the inevitable Wayne Shocker vs. Dracon match would not happen in 2005.

Sparky returns after missing one show to team with Big Smith and win the All-Vermilion Tag Team Championships from X-Celerator and Scarlet Spider, ending their 1 month reign as champions. Dare Devil interfered, continuing his feud with X-Celerator.

Farmland Fallout
It was announced that Sparky would not be able to wrestle for the rest of the year due to his job. Wayne Shocker then defeats Old School McGee in the 2nd ever Last Man Dancing match to win the NPW Unified Hardcore Championship. Sparky had held the title since winning it at the Farewell to El Ninja show last year.

X-Celerator wins the NPW Championship by beating Dare Devil and Scarlet Spider in a 3-way dance, ending Dare Devil's 10 month reign as champion. The X-Celerator/Dare Devil feud would not end there.

The Toxies win the All-Vermilion Tag Team Championships. Big Smith said he'd defend the belts without his partner, Sparky. Wild Bill offered to be Smith's partner, but immidiately turned on him. It turned out to be a plan orchestrated by Dan Benson to get back at Smith from causing him to lose at King of Extreme.

Wild Bill's last match in 2005 is a victory over Off Duty Officer Johnson. Bill would suffer a serious head and neck injury wrestling for another organization prior to Homecoming Bash.

NPW's first "Who's Your Daddy?" match is held. Tilton Tangler defeats Gumbo Boy to blow off their feud. Human feces was involved with the finish of this one.

"Longhorn" Dan Benson defeats Mars in a 2 out of 3 falls match to blow off their long standing feud that began in early 2004.

Homecoming Bash
Big Smith defeats Dan Benson by DQ, leading to an No DQ classic brawl for the next show.

An injured Wayne Shocker successfully defends the NPW Unified Hardcore Championship against former champion Sparky. Shocker's ankle injury would prevent him from participating for the rest of the year. This was Sparky's return match after we thought he would be out for the rest of the year.

Tilton Tangler is out for the rest of the year after losing to X-Celerator in an NPW Championship match.

Lights Out
Off Duty Officer Johnson and Sour Dawg finally wrestle each other after being booked to go at it all year long. Johnson won.
Gumbo Boy and "Longhorn" Dan Benson reunite to win the All-Vermilion Tag Team Championships over the Toxies, ending their two month reign as champions. Wild Bill was scheduled to be Gumbo's partners, but was injured before Homecoming Bash.

Dracon returns from a neck injury to win a pizza box battle royal. It had been announced that Dracon would be out for the rest of the year.

Big Smith defeats "Longhorn" Dan Benson in a brutal match to win the DCW Championship, ending Benson's year long reign with the title. With this win, Smith becomes NPW's first grand slam championship winner.

X-Celerator defeats Dare Devil in a Last Man Standing match. This would be the last NPW match of 2005. Whether or not this settles the score between these two remains to be seen.
