![]() Mick Gene here with Part 2 of my September column. Let's start by going over some recent news involving the Unified Hardcore Championship situation. After that's explained, I'll cover the title switches in the tag team division, then touch on some of my favorite moments from the past few shows.
In case you didn't know by now, Sparky's job as a firefighter will probably cause him to miss the rest of the year. He isn't Mortitorium bound just yet, but it's enough to where he had to be stripped of the Unified Hardcore Championship he held since July 2004. For Farmland Fallout, I wanted to see the #1 Contender to the title face off with the former champion. The #1 contender we have: Wayne Shocker. Originally, we were gonna have Wayne vs. Dracon to determine the #1 contender, but Dracon's probably gonna be out for the rest of the year with a neck injury suffered from Chilly McFreeze's stunner at Heatstroke.
So we have our #1 contender in Wayne Shocker. The former champion is a little more complicated. The real former champion is El Ninja, who left the company on a scheduling dispute after Tag Twister. Before El Ninja was Sparky and we know he's out. Before Sparky was Dare Devil, but he's the NPW Champion and is a little busy with X-Celerator and Scarlet Spider at Farmland Fallout. Before Dare Devil was Wildkat but he's overseas buying movies on DVD before they're even in the theatres here. Before Wildkat was Arnie Ambiguous but he hasn't returned since the brutal pounding he took from X-Celerator last year. Ah, but before Arnie was Big Smith, who is available! Not that the guy doesn't deserve the opportunity. He's picked up some key wins in 2005 and is one half of the current NPW All-Vermilion Tag Team Champions. But his partner is for all intents and purposes done with NPW.
That brings us to the tag team situation. To my knowledge, never has any NPW championship hot potatoed like the tag belts recently. X-Celerator and Scarlet Spider overcame incredible odds at Barnyard Blitz by defeating the teams of Big Smith and Omega and the former Alpha Males on the same day to win the belts. At Heatstroke, however; Dare Devil spoiled what was sure to be a prosperous title reign, thus setting up the main event for Farmland Fallout. With Sparky's availability in question and Big Smith busy wrestling for the Unified Hardcore Championship, the fate of the tag team championships hang in the balance. Of course, the winner of the Toxies vs. Ivan Ruski and Art Martial match will be in great standing to challenge for the belts in October at Homecoming Bash.
Now for some moments remembered. I didn't go back and watch the past few shows (those who know me may have a hard time believing that) so I'll basically be going on memory here. There wasn't much to praise at Tag Twister, besides the dedication shown by the wrestlers by wrestling in the rain. Sparky slipping on the wet mat during his signature charging knee sure was hilarious though. And what was with Albert Yankum cheering on Sparky yelling "kick his ass!" during one of the 12 hot tags in the finals? Tilton Tangler and El Ninja did give us a nice bonus main event and the best team did win that tournament, even if Big Smith felt the need to challenge another team at Barnyard Blitz the next month.
On to NPW's premire event of the year, that being King of Extreme. Did we really need to see two people die? I understand Hoghead retreated back to the 666th level of hell, but for cryin' out loud, Wayne Hewes III accidentally drank poison and died. I suppose there's justice there, you know, since he was trying to kill one of the Toxies.
Too bad we didn't know Wildkat was going to be available at King of Extreme until after Barnyard Blitz, and against "Sweet" Jimmy D. in a stretcher match no less. We've would've hyped that match like a mutha, as it was their first meeting since Wildkat viciously attacked his former 3-King compadre back in November '03, signaling the end of the 3-Kings and any hopes of an NPW vs. DCW storyline. The match was bloody as expected and I don't think anyone expected Wildkat to pull off the victory. Jimmy took a lot out of Wildkat though, enough for Old School McGee to take him out rather quickly in the next round.
The Old School McGee vs. Black Coal Carson showed that wrestling never leaves a true wrestler's blood. Although I loved the set up, I didn't wanna envision Carson sleeping with McGee's wife, even if it was 20 years ago.
It's a good thing for NPW that King Kong Bruiser Doty is on a pay per appearance situation because the way he mowed through Dick Norton Anderson would spell doom for many on the roster. Toxic Billy was able to pull off a victory over Doty, but I think it's because Doty didn't understand the rules of a Japanese Turnbuckle match.
As I mentioned in my previous column, congratulations go to Wayne Shocker for winning the King of Extreme Tournament. He pinned Hoghead Hellspawn five times, outlasted a seemingly unstoppable Dan Benson, then outwitted Old School McGee and his former partner Dracon in the finals. Then he followed that performance with coming very close to defeating Dare Devil for the NPW Championship at Heatstroke.
With Big Smith assisting Wayne Shocker in defeating Dan Benson at King of Extreme, we're bound to see Smith vs. Benson by the end of the year. Will it be for the DCW Championship? Could it be for the Unified Hardcore Championship? Could it be a grudge match with neither man as a champion? Could it be a unification match??? Time will tell. Keep watching NPW!!!!!!
